Softly Softly

A weekend of fauna, photos, fun, participation and appreciation of World Heritage treasures in the Border Ranges Region of Northern NSW.

WHAT?
‘Softly Softly’ is a wildlife photographic competition with a difference. Run over two days the essential aim is to photograph as many different species of wildlife within an allocated time span and within the allocated area. An ‘entrant’ can be a single person or a group but only one camera is allowed per entrant.

MORE DETAILS?
For the purposes of this competition wildlife will exclude all insects with the exception of moths, butterflies, and wasps. Also excluded are insect larvae and worms. Included are all native mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and crustaceans. Under no circumstances can wildlife be handled or in any way interfered with in attempting to photograph them.

WHERE?
The area of the competition will be defined as all areas east of the McKellar Range within the Kyogle Shire and all areas of the Border Ranges National Park. All competitors are bound by road rules, rules of trespass and National Parks regulations and etiquette.

The start and finish point and the judging area is the Border Ranges Centre at Wadeville.

WHEN?
The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September 2009.

Formal competition goes from 10:00 to 5:00pm on the Saturday and from 7:00 to 1:00 pm on the Sunday.

This is the weekend closest to World Threatened Species Day.

All entrants must be on site at least 45 minutes before starting.

Registration will be accepted on the day- however we cannot guarantee that entrants registering on the day can be processed in time for a 10:00 am start.

This will be a very busy time for officials. If at all possible please arrange registration before the due date to save the organisers extra strain on the morning of the event.

JUDGING AND POINTS ALLOCATION
Photos and identification lists will be submitted to the judging panel at the end of each day. Their job is
a)to judge whether the photo is in fact recognisable as a particular species and
b) ascertain if the photographer has in fact identified the species correctly.
Judges will then allocate points. The judges’ decisions will be final and there will be no provision for appeal.
One point will be awarded for each species photographed and a second point will be awarded if the entrant is able to correctly name the species. Either common names or scientific names will be acceptable. Prizes will be awarded for placegetters
